The SOS family support program
Initial situation: Relative poverty also exists in Liechtenstein. Unfortunately, it is still a very taboo subject. Despite both parents working full-time, many families can only afford the bare essentials (basic health insurance). If a child falls ill and requires therapy, this presents families with major financial difficulties, as these are often only partially covered or not covered at all by health insurance or disability insurance.
Therapies and support services for single parents or stressed parents are urgently needed, especially in stressful family situations, for example due to poverty, mental health problems or addiction. This is where the SOS Family Support Program comes in by covering the costs of therapies, aids or services.
Equine-assisted therapy - what is it?
Pediatricians often prescribe equine-assisted therapy. This is a special form of support in which children and horses work together in an individually supervised environment. The aim of this therapy is to give the children self-confidence, a sense of responsibility and empathy through direct contact with the animals, especially through being together and interacting.
Susi Erne, riding therapist in Liechtenstein, explains: "At the beginning of the therapy, the child is allowed to choose a horse with which it can build a bond. This choice creates trust and security, both for the child and for the horse, as not every horse suits every child. During the lessons, the children are allowed to groom the horse, lead it or spend time with it in a quiet environment. They take responsibility for the animal, make their own decisions and help shape their lesson. This freedom promotes self-determination and strengthens self-esteem."
Horse-assisted therapy is not a traditional riding lesson, but a therapeutic process that gives the child space to develop. "Interacting with the horses offers the children an opportunity to overcome their fears, develop trust and become aware of their own needs. Especially in an environment that is free from distractions and hectic, they can open up and grow without pressure," explains Susi Erne.
Time and closeness to nature can work wonders
It is important that every child is given the time they need. Children often come with insecurities or fears, but a lot changes over the course of the therapy: they breathe more freely, relax and build a deep connection with the horses. This development is usually a silent but very noticeable process.
In addition to the work with the animals, it is also the atmosphere that makes this therapy so special. The peace and seclusion in nature help the children to concentrate fully on themselves and the animal. The horses involved in the therapy are trained companions. Their presence and the opportunity to work with them at eye level can have a healing effect on the children.
