Tigray: A region in a state of emergency
In the Tigray region, conflict and drought have led to a complex humanitarian crisis characterized by alarmingly high levels of food insecurity, gender-based violence, high casualty rates, trauma, widespread displacement, limited access to services and the destruction of the local economy.
This crisis has severely affected the lives of millions of people, especially women and girls, people with special protection needs, youth and minority groups.
Currently, 1.4 million people are in need of food assistance and nearly one million internally displaced people are living in Tigray. According to the Regional Nutrition Cluster report (June 2024), the number of malnourished children in the region has increased by 16,201 children.
To address these challenges, SOS Children's Villages is launching a multi-year emergency relief program in autumn 2024, focusing on three core areas
Protection and psychological support: we provide protection and health services for abused women and children, set up shelters and promote trauma recovery for thousands of children.
Nutrition: We support malnourished children and pregnant women by providing supplementary nutrition and distributing food.
Education: We equip schools with materials, support teachers and advocate for the rights of all children, regardless of their impairment.
