Emergency Aid for Nepal

In the wake of the devastating flood disaster on August 26, 2026, SOS Children's Villages in Nepal is providing 5,980 affected children, caregivers, and families with urgently needed emergency aid, protection, and psychosocial support.

Emergency Aid Following the Flood Disaster in Nepal

On August 26, 2026, a devastating flash flood struck the Nepalese districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. Massive floodwaters destroyed homes, roads, bridges, schools, and health facilities. More than 1,450 people lost their lives, and several thousand are still missing. Approximately 1.6 million people have been affected by the disaster, including 17,000 children.

The situation is particularly dire for children. Many have lost their homes, can no longer attend school, or have been separated from their families. At least 107 children may be without their parents or caregivers. They are at particular risk of becoming victims of neglect, exploitation, or human trafficking. At the same time, many areas lack clean drinking water, food, and safe shelter.

SOS Children’s Villages has been active in Nepal for many years and operates four SOS Children’s Villages and four youth facilities in the affected Bagmati Province. Since these were spared by the floods, the organization was able to quickly mobilize aid. Together with local authorities and partner organizations, SOS Children’s Villages is supporting particularly vulnerable children and families. The focus is on their protection, the provision of essential supplies, and their return to as safe a daily life as possible.

The relief efforts include:

  • Identifying and caring for unaccompanied children and those separated from their families

  • Searching for relatives and reuniting separated families

  • Setting up child-friendly spaces with meals, play areas, and care services

  • Psychological first aid and psychosocial support for children and families

  • Distribution of food, blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, and other relief supplies

  • Nutritional support for infants, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers

  • Provision of hygiene kits, toilets, and handwashing stations

  • Financial support through targeted cash and voucher assistance

  • Establishment of temporary learning centers and distribution of school supplies and winter clothing

  • Support for rebuilding livelihoods through agricultural tools, vocational training, and income-generating opportunities

  • Strengthening disaster preparedness and early warning systems in the affected communities

The emergency aid program runs from September 2026 to February 2028. In addition to providing immediate relief, the program aims to restore a sense of security and access to education for children and to support families in rebuilding their livelihoods after the disaster.
