The Gambia is a small country in West Africa. It borders the Atlantic Ocean, but is otherwise completely surrounded by its neighbor Senegal. With around 2.4 million inhabitants, it is one of the smallest but most densely populated countries in Africa. More than half of the population lives in cities and surrounding regions. The economy is dominated by agriculture and many families struggle to survive on a daily basis.
Almost half of the population lives in poverty. Around one in ten children suffers from acute malnutrition, and almost a quarter of children's development is impaired due to chronic malnutrition.
Working for children and families for over 40 years
In 1981, SOS Children's Villages opened the country's first children's village in Bakoteh, a district of the largest city, Serekunda. What began as a refuge for children without parental care has developed into a comprehensive program: Today, it also includes daycare centers, schools, medical centers and vocational training centers.
SOS Children's Villages provides orphaned and disadvantaged children with a sound education and vocational training that matches their individual talents and abilities. Young people receive targeted support and guidance on their path to an independent life.
Strengthening families - securing the future
When parents are in need, it is often difficult to take sufficient care of their children. This is why SOS Children's Villages works closely with local partners and communities to provide families with individual support. This enables them to stay together and overcome crises.
For children who cannot grow up in their families, even with additional help, the SOS Children's Village in Bakoteh offers a loving home where they can find security, education and prospects.
Today, thanks to the support of SOS Children's Villages, numerous families can be stabilized, children attend kindergartens and schools, and young people are accompanied on their way to independence.
Hope and a future - day by day
What began in Bakoteh is now emblematic of the work of SOS Children's Villages throughout The Gambia: making children strong, keeping families together and strengthening communities. Help us, because your support makes all the difference.
