What happens when a child loses the security of a family home? Often, they lose far more than just a home—namely, protection, guidance, and the chance for a secure future. This is exactly where the SOS Children’s Villages program in Tarija, Bolivia, comes in.
In a region where poverty, domestic violence, and social inequality shape the daily lives of many families, the situation is particularly challenging. More than 40% of children in Tarija grow up in multidimensional poverty. This means limited access to education, healthcare, and social services. At the same time, the region’s border location with Argentina and Paraguay increases the risk of child trafficking.
Strengthening Families, Protecting Children
The program’s goal is clear: children should be able to grow up in a safe, loving environment—ideally within their own families. That is why SOS Children’s Villages provides targeted support to help families overcome crises and guide their children with autonomy. Parents receive training, children are supported and cared for, and families in particularly difficult situations receive concrete help in their daily lives. There is also a special focus on extended families: wherever possible, children should remain in their family environment. At the same time, foster families are supported, and reunifications with biological families are carefully facilitated.
A safe home when it is urgently needed
When children cannot live with their parents, either temporarily or permanently, SOS Children’s Villages offers alternative forms of care: from short-term placement to foster families and SOS families, both in the children’s village and integrated into residential neighborhoods. This creates a stable environment that provides safety and security. Young adults are not left to fend for themselves either. They receive support on their path to an independent life until the age of 24.
New Approaches: Promoting Active Fatherhood
An innovative component of the program is the promotion of active fatherhood. Fathers are encouraged to take responsibility, strengthen emotional bonds, and actively participate in their children’s upbringing. This not only empowers children but also breaks down traditional gender roles and promotes equality.
Making a difference together
In total, the program reaches 691 children, adolescents, and caregivers—and its impact extends far beyond them into the community. With your support, we help break this cycle of poverty and hopelessness. You provide children not only with protection but also with opportunities, giving them what every child deserves: a loving home and a future full of possibilities.
